Transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one can feel overwhelming. This is especially true for veterans who face unique challenges when returning to civilian life. In this blog post, I want to share my journey and transformation. From realizing I was getting dangerously close to life-threatening issues, to losing almost 60lbs, and everything in between.
The Wake-Up Call
Many veterans return from service to find themselves in a tough situation. The shift to civilian life can lead to a sedentary lifestyle filled with comfort food and little motivation.
My holy shit moment came around Christmas of 2023 when I got the news from my doctor that my blood test was showing signs of diabetes for the second time. My doctor works on a 3 strike policy and told me if my numbers came back bad again, I would have to start treatment for diabetes. At the same time, I put a suit on my wishlist for Christmas. It was XL. When I got it, it BARELY fit. Then and there I told myself that I was going to do everything I could to fit into that suit by the end of 2024.
Setting Realistic Goals
With a new purpose in mind, I began to set achievable fitness goals. Understanding that fitness is a journey, I started with small, manageable steps.
Be Active: I initially committed to taking breaks from my desk (I work remotely) to just get up and stretch. While it felt almost like a nuisance at first, I quickly developed it as a near necessity, I got to a point where I couldn't sit for more than 1-2 hours at a time without a stretch.
Healthier Choices: It may seem little but I found that even the small things make you feel better about yourself. Stop taking the elevator. Take the stairs whenever possible. Park a little further away from the entrance at the store. Little things to raise your activity level.
Get out of the house: I decided that getting out of the house and doing something other than sitting behind a screen would be better for my health. In my case, I picked up golfing. It was something that I have always enjoyed, I played with my brother and father in high school. I figured it was something that I enjoyed while also being fairly low impact that I can use to get my body adjusted to being active.
These small goals created a sense of momentum. Each victory, no matter how small, built my confidence and motivation.
Nutrition: A Key Ingredient
Alongside fitness, nutrition became a top priority. I realized that a poor diet was the primary source of my issues. I closely examined my eating habits and made changes.
Being More Conscious: I started paying closer attention to what I was eating. At first I wasn't sure if making the small little changes like; instead of fries, get the veggies, would make very much of a difference but I quickly started noticing it was. There wasn't much change in my diet but that. I just started making smarter choices.
Meal Preparation: To stay on track, I started meal prepping on weekends, which not only saved time but also limited the temptation to indulge in unhealthy snacks during busy weekdays.
Hydration: Wanting to drink more water, I bought the biggest reusable water bottle I could find and made hydration a priority. I sometimes find it very hard to drink just straight water all day so I found great solace in the sugar free drink mix-ins.
The Mental Game
Success involves more than physical changes; the mental aspect is equally vital. Throughout my journey, I faced numerous mental challenges, which I learned to overcome.
Get Control Of My Mental Health: I finally starting acting on the mental health issues that have been silently and quietly plaguing me. It took a long time for me to realize that my anxiety about being around people was making my overall mental health a wreck. It was the reason I never left the house.
Celebrating Small Wins: I began acknowledging every achievement—from completing a workout to making a healthy meal. I started paying attention to the physical and mental changes that were happening due to these better decisions.
Developing mental resilience through these practices positively affected my fitness journey and other areas of my life.
The Path to Change
The shift from a sedentary lifestyle to one full of energy and strength is an incredible journey. I hope my story acts as an inspiration, showing that change is possible for anyone eager to take that first step.
Whether you are embarking on your fitness journey or supporting someone else along the way, recognize the importance of small steps, community support, and mental resilience. As I discovered, the path to a healthier and more fulfilling life is accessible for all who are willing to invest the effort.

Keep challenging yourself, and who knows? You might find the fit warrior inside you!
Keep checking back for more installments of my journey. Next I will be talking about my experiences in the gym and what I have learned.
